The Plaza in New York puts iPads in control in every room

• 06/02/2011

Since the beginning of the year, the Plaza has switched over to using iPads in every single room.  Not only are the iPads a guest perk and luxury feature but replaces the past touch-screen device used to control the guest experience in the room or suite.

Too warm or cold?  Just adjust the temperature on the iPad.  Want to dim the lights?  Just whip out the iPad and do that too.  A bit hungry?  Order some room service on the iPad.  You can literally do anything on the iPad that replaces the conventional way of communicating with hotel staff.  Request a wake-up call, talk to the concierge, make restaurant reservations.  You can even print off your boarding passes.

So, why the iPad and not something else?  Well, according to the general manager of the hotel, their previous system, “wasn’t sophisticated enough for what we wanted to do” and they “chose the iPad because it is a great piece of equipment that is here to stay and won’t disappear tomorrow.”

Makes sense to us.

The iPad app that the Plaza is using is a custom created one by Intelity.  Here’s a video:
